James Tucker and Kelsey Zukowski Terrify Us In “Within These Walls”

By Michael Goth

During the late 1960’s and early 1970’s three low budget horror films redefined the horror genre. The films were George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968), Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left (1972) and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974).

Craven’s film was and remains to this day the most unsettling of the three, which is probably why it didn’t take in nearly as much at the box office as Hooper’s and Romero’s. It’s my guess that until MGM released Last House on video during the summer of 2000 that more people had probably heard about the film then had actually seen it. And that MGM release, like an 80’s release of the film that was banned as a “video nasty”, featured many of the film’s more graphic scenes edited down. It wasn’t until 2003 that MGM put out an uncut version of the film on DVD.

The Last House on the Left starts out rather comical and lightweight before an almost unbearable horror and sense of dread takes over. Even in the early scenes there is a certain intensity and feeling of doom just beneath the surface of the humor.

While recently watching the teaser trailer for a new film currently In production called Within These Walls, I was reminded of my very first time seeing Craven’s classic but unquestionably disturbing classic.

Within These Walls is a psychological horror film written by Kelsey Zukowski and James Tucker, with Tucker directing. The story is about a young woman (Zukowski), who has recently lost her mother. She decides to stay in the house that her mother had lived in. However, the house is home to more than just memories. There is a lurking evil possessing the house that will pray on all of the young woman’s weaknesses and will bring her to the edge of madness like Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

Kelsey Zukowski has stated to being an admirer of Wes Craven, which may account for why the scenes in the teaser trailer for Within These Walls feels so much like early Craven such as Last House and 1977’s The Hills Have Eyes. Also, director Tucker seems to have a documentary film like style which Craven also brought to his first two films.

Another trait that the team of Zukowski and Tucker share with Craven is the desire to take an audience on a psychological trip that will test their endurance. When Craven made The Last House on the Left there were cases of grown men crying while watching the film as it presented an intensity and realism in its portrayal of violence that no one had ever seen before.

In an era when many horror movies rely too much on CGI effects and bloodletting to get a reaction from an audience, Within These Walls represents a return to old style movie making when horror was a way to address cultural and psychological issues. James Tucker and Kelsey Zukowski are using horror today very much the way Wes Craven did in the 1970’s.

Michael Rooker returns as Merle Dixon in The Walking Dead!

AMC’s The Walking Dead ranked in as one of the highest rated shows on network television last year, but what makes it such an appealing show? It’s not the zombie apocalypse devastating the world, or the action between the living dead and the survivors, nor is it about the horror element all together. What makes TWD so appealing is the human element, the will to see these variety of people from different backgrounds push on through life in a world turned upside down and somehow make it through it all.

Last season we were given a teaser of what’s to come next for Rick and his group, but more importantly, we were given a few hints at the introduction of a few interesting (Michonne), yet sinister (The Governor,) characters from the comic as well as the promise of the return of past characters including Merle Dixon (Played by Michael Rooker) brother of Daryl Dixon. . When last we saw Merle he was handcuffed to a poll on the roof top of a building in Atlanta with vengeances in his eyes for being left behind by Rick and the group. However if this still is any indication about Merle’s wellbeing, it’s that he alive and well and is itching for some payback.

The new season of The Walking Dead returns Sundays this fall on AMC.

Extra Tidbit: So do you think Merle’s reintroduction around the same time as The Governor coming into the picture merely a coincidence, or is there something much more sinister at play here?

TMNT Reboot Gets Working Title!

They say in all things, there is a silver lining. While I do agree with that assessment, fan boys near and far have unfailingly agreed that there is no silver lining when it comes to messing with one’s childhood memories. Earlier this month it was reported that Transformer’s director Michael Bay announced plans to reboot the successful 80’s franchise which spawned three theatrical released live action films, a successful long running cartoon in the 90’s and a CGI sequel in 2007. So what had fans up in arms against Bay’s announcement? Well, for one; the changing of key elements from the turtles’ origins, such as changing them from mutants into aliens and the fact that he this sent the fans into an uproar over the matter by telling them to “chill out”. [News on the reboot announcement]

But now there’s more word on the matter such as a working title. Bleeding Cool has reported and verified that the new reboot will be called “Ninja Turtles”…. Come again? Yep you’ve read right, it appears they won’t be teenagers either now.

According Bleeding Cool one of the sources who broke the news of the title had gone on record to say “It seems to be driven by marketing. Think of John Carter and how Disney wouldn’t allow for a title with either “Princess” or “Mars”.”

Well as much as I enjoyed John Cater, the simplification of dropping out “of Mars” from the title has proven to be a big disappointment at the box office. Does Ninja Turtles have a shot to prevail where other films could not, or will this prove to be a repeat of history? No word as of yet on casting announcements but it’s assume that’ll change very soon if it’s coming out in just under two years.

Extra Tidbit: Can the Turtles make a comeback with Bay/ Liebesman at the helm?

“The Office” Leslie David Baker is a Ladies Man in Début Single!

Now days it’s a highly common thing to see actors take a stab at the music scene, it’s not a surprise really, I mean celebrities have been doing it for decades. However there comes a time when a rarity such as this comes along and you can’t help but say “Whaaa!” followed by “Yeaaah!” for some, what I speak of might come as a bit of old news, but I assure you that those of you who haven’t seen it yet will no doubt be in shock because there is nothing more surprising and epic then seeing NBC’s The Office very own Leslie David Baker rock it out in his autotune dance début single “2 Be Simple” (Featuring N.U.M.).

Now I know what you’re thinking, anytime the word “autotune” is brought up involving a song it can’t be good, well I assure you while that might be the case this is the exception as we see ol’ Leslie work his smooth moves with the ladies (you one sly dog Les), and trust me you’ll be laughing with excitement by the end of the video. Now scroll down and see why Leslie is the man when it comes to all the ladies! See him rocking it out Ke$ style!

Extra Tidbit: Now I know why Stanley is always eager to get the hell out of Dunder-Mifflin at the end of the day, I would too if I had a house full of hotties waiting for me.

First Look: Vin Diesel Back in Action as Riddick!

Remember the year 2000? Sure you do, it was a fairly decent year for movies! One in particular that comes to mind was a sci-fi horror film starring a yet to be known New Yorker who’s career would blow up into mega-action stardom! Yep you guessed it right, I’m talking about Pitch Black (2000). You remember four years later when we were all served up a sequel called The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)? Sure you do, it vastly differed from its predecessor in both theme and tone when the horror element was dropped completely? Remember the awesome sequel that followed? No? Yeah me neither… We were told about one in the works and even teased about it over the years, but that was about as far as it went, talks and negations. And eight years later what do we have for show? Well I’m glad you asked because we’re finally getting a third entry in the series! And even better there’s proof! Below is the first official still of actor Vin Diesel in full Riddick gear, which was shared by his official Facebook page.

Little is known about when we’ll be seeing this flick hit the sliver screen at the moment but here’s the synopsis: “Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.”

As of right now the official cast list includes: Vin Diesel. Karl Urban. Katee Sackhoff. And Jordi Molla. With Director David Twohy set to direct.

Extra Tidbit: with nearly eight years since its last sequel do you think the series will be able to muster up enough steam to get the fans back in the seats?

First Look at Resident Evil: Retribution

I was a big fan of the first Resident Evil film back in 2002 despite it not quite living up to the material it’s based on, and as cheesy as it’s follow up ‘Apocalypse’(2004) was I still fairly enjoy the hell out of it. That being said however, I was not a really big fan of its third entry in the series ‘Extinction’ (2007), but it somehow managed to redeem itself with the third sequel ‘Afterlife’ (2010) now barely two years later and we’ve already got another installment on its way with RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION!

If you haven’t seen it already earlier in the week then the first official stills of fifth entry in the Resident Evil franchise has been released Via Twitter Here and Here

Synopsis: The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington DC, and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.Resident Evil: Retribution is starring: Milla Jovovich. Kevin Durand. Michelle Rodriguez. Jason Isaacs. Sienna Guillory. Oded Fehr. Johann Urb. Bingbing Li. Shawn Roberts. And Colin Salmon. And is set to be released in theaters everywhere September 17th. 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Wow! Talk about a reunion of a few familiar faces making their epic return in the franchise. It’s a shame Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller won’t be returning as Claire and Chris Redfield.

Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga Set to star in James Wan’s The Conjuring

Director James Wan has only five features under his belt (according to IMDB) and yet he’s already considered by some as a master of horror. Personally I’ve only had the pleasure seeing four of his five films, three of which are among my favorite films of the 2000 era, On the other hand, the fourth is one of my least favorites (wouldn’t you like to know which one is that?) Last year’s box office success ‘INSIDIOUS’ was a tremendous success both critically and finically pulling in over $54 million domestically while racking in just a few million shy of a cool $100 million worldwide on a budget of only, get this; $1.5 Mill! Insidious (Limited release in 2010) is probably one of the most profitable horror films of 2011. So with that type of numbers pulled in on such an impressively small budget you have to respect James Wan for always attracting such a top notch cast in all his features.

So with that being said, it only makes sense that he’d keep the paranormal theme going right into his next project THE CONJURING. According to The Hollywood Reporter actor Patrick Wilson (Insidious) and Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) are going to play “a husband and wife team of demonologists and psychic investigators who enter the most horrifying case of their career, spirits in a Rhode Island farmhouse.”

The Conjuring is written by Chad and Carey Hayes and is “based on the real life tale of the Perron family and their ordeals in the 1970s. When New Line acquired the pitch from the Hayes, it included life rights to the Perron family and the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.” Filming is slated to begin this March in North Carolina with a TBA 2013 release date.

Extra Tidbit: I wonder how Wan will handle the supernatural aspect of the plot since it’s based on a true story, will he give it the poltergeist treatment?

True Blood Gets New Blood Next Season!

If you’ve ever heard the phrase Fangbanger or have the overwhelming urge to say “You are mine” in a deep seductive southern accent, then it’s most likely you’re a fan of author Charlaine Harris’ The Southern Vampire Mysteries AKA The Sookie Stackhouse Novels AKA True Blood (wow that a lot of AKA’s.) and most likely an even bigger fan of the hit HBO series. With that being said, one could argue that True Blood played a huge part to the recent successes of vampire lore being a popular topic in all forms of media today. And with the series being at an all-time high in ratings and popularity what could possibly make the show even more interesting? Well how about some new faces added to the cast for the next season? Yep that’s right, Deadline reports that two new actors have been cast for the 5th season of True Blood. At the moment the creators have been mum on anything regarding the production of next season including what direction the general plot will be taking next year. However, with that being said, Deadline acquired an expulsive regarding the two new additions to the cast. Actress Kelly Overton and actor Louis Herthum will be joining the cast next year with each getting a 6 to 7 episode story arc next season.

Overton, will play a dirty, beautiful werewolf named Rikki who demands to know what’s become of the pack leader.
Herthum, will play a particularly large Marine-type werewolf who refuses to bow down before the new pack leader.

Meanwhile there is still no official word by the creators or not if season 5 will in fact be the shows last season or not. As hinted by the creators early this year, there have been some hints at the possibility that season 5th may or may not be the last season for the hit HBO show. For now Trubies will just have to wait it out until official word on the subject does come down the wire, If and when word does arise you can bet we will report it.

Side Tidbit: I’m probably going to get some heat from this but I honestly don’t care, if you think Twilight is what Vampires are, then you know nothing about vampires and don’t deserve to call yourself a fan of the lore.
